Rockville RPG2X15 Review

The Rockville RPG2X15 package is designed for parties, live performances, and public address. For the price, you get a fantastic PA system bundle that includes two 15” speakers, one 8-channel powered mixer, two mics, two speaker stands, and all the necessary cables as well.

If you are looking for a simple, easy to transport live sound package for smaller gigs, then you can’t beat the RPG2X15 for the price and features. This is our Rockville RPG2X15 review.

The Speakers

The system includes two 15-inch, 350W RMS, 8-ohm professional long-throw woofers, each with two-inch voice coils as well as an impressive 40 oz magnets. The 1” titanium diaphragm tweeters are of good quality, delivering crisp detailed highs. The max SPL this speaker can deliver is 112dB.

The speaker cabinet is molded plastic with a two-way cabinet architecture design, meaning you can use it horizontally or vertically for your setup as the main speaker or stage monitor. It’s also pole-mountable, which comes in handy. The grill is made of powder-coated steel.

The input connections for this speaker system include one speak-on jack and two1/4″ jacks. You’ll receive two 10-foot speaker cables.

Rockville markets the RGPG2X15 speakers as a 1400-watt peak, but here I like to keep it real, and the continuous power it can deliver is 350W, which is more than enough for a medium-sized venue.

The Powered Mixer

The speakers are powered by an eight-channel power mixer that has a 350W RMS amplifier. It also features built-in Bluetooth and a user-friendly LCD to help select songs from the SD/USB mp3 player. It also features 17 Inputs/outputs in all, including a:

  • USB / SD input for MP3 playback
  • Tape/CD Line inputs
  • Eight balanced XLR inputs
  • 1/4″ microphone inputs
  • Return input for connecting external effects processors

Controls

The RPG2X15 comes with standard controls, including a master volume control, plus bass, treble, and level controls for each channel. It also includes a control for the reverb effect level on each channel and a control for the digital delay with independent level control. Finally, the system features a five-band graphic equalizer and a line out for connecting to an external amplifier.

Sound Performance

The Rockville RPG2X15 has decent sound for small outdoor events or medium indoor events. The speakers deliver a mid-range bass with clear mids and crisp highs. The impedance comes in at 8 Ohm, and the frequency range is between 55Hz – 20KHz, with a sensitivity of 94dB.

Don’t expect this speaker to deliver deep, punchy bass, for that you would need something else.

The included microphones, however, are not of the highest quality models. It does give a natural sound, though you may choose to upgrade that later on. It has a reliable frequency response of 50Hz-15kHz, a super-cardioid polar pattern, and an impedance rate of 600 Ohm ±5%. The sensitivity levels range from -60dB ± 3dB (0dB=1V/Pa at 1KHz).

System Design

This PA system by Rockville is built well enough to hold up to your outdoor events. The speakers are made well and with quality materials, and each speaker has a 15″ woofer featuring a two-inch coil for better performance and a 40-ounce magnet.

Ruggedness

The overall build makes this system more than suitable for traveling, thanks in part to the molded plastic constructions and powder-coated steel grills, making them extra durable. You do have to take proper care of them, of course, to keep them looking and performing as they should.

Advantages of the RPG2X15

Overall, we are pleased with this system. It has excellent sound for the price. The speakers have a crisp sound with adequate power at the bass end. The sound is good even without adding a subwoofer. Adding the subwoofer, of course, rounds out the sound even more.

The portability is excellent as well. The system is lightweight and easily portable. The stands hold up well, and the pole mount is a nice plus. The SD and USB slots are great features, too, as they allow you to keep the music going between sets with little programming. Keep in mind that this PA system is best for small to medium-sized outdoor events. That was by design. If you have larger gigs planned, you may need to invest in something more robust that can cover the larger venue.

Disadvantages of the RPG2X15

On the downside, the microphones are ok, but you can upgrade later if you’d like. They make decent backups and practice mics, but we are going with better quality units for performances other than karaoke. We found that the cables were lacking a bit in quality as well, so it would be a good idea to invest in a couple of good quality cables like the 10-foot Mogami Gold STUDIO, the 25-foot Fender Professional XLR, or the 25-foot GLS Audio XLR Cable.

Keep in mind that this system isn’t designed for professional live shows and large venues. It’s great for the amateur and karaoke. Other uses would be as a PA system for events like trade shows, public address, etc. But for live concerts, it can fall short.

Smaller Alternatives From Rockville

A smaller alternative to this PA system is the Rockville RPG2X12, which uses two 12″ speaker cabinets and an 8-channel mixer with the same connection capabilities, including the USB/SD MP3 playback and Bluetooth connection. It also comes as a bundle with all the accessories.

For an even more portable PA system from this same line, choose the Rockville RPG2X10, which uses two 10″ speakers and a 4-channel powered mixer, also includes the USB/SD MP3 playback and Bluetooth. Comes bundled with everything you need.

Conclusion

Overall, the Rockville RPG2X15 is a great sound system for the amateur performer or for someone who needs a PA system for smaller venues. While it is best suited for use outdoors, it does well indoors, too. It’s lightweight and easy to set up.

The speakers are of good quality and have a sturdy build. The mixer has a lot of options, and the Bluetooth connectivity along with SD/USB ports are great features to have. Even though the mics are cables are less than desirable, you’re still getting an excellent package for the price.
